CENTRE MANAGER: eMMA bROWN

I’ve been part of this community venue since the very beginning, from the school’s closure and the first public consultations, right through to the opening of the centre in 2008. I initially joined as a trustee and later volunteered in the office, supporting the manager. In 2012, I stepped down as a trustee to take on a part-time paid role, and in 2018, I proudly became the venue’s manager. I love this building, its history, its character, and the wonderful mix of people who come through its doors. As a local resident and parent with children attending nearby schools, I understand the importance of having a vibrant community space at the heart of our neighbourhood. By trade, I’m a playworker, and I’m passionate about providing opportunities for the community to access creative arts and play. Collaborating with independent creatives and local charities to bring new ideas and energy into the venue is one of the best parts of my job.

As CEO of Warrington VIP, one of the resident charities at The Old School Project, I’ve seen first-hand the incredible potential this community centre has as a vibrant hub for local people, charities, and independent artists. I decided to take on the role of Chair of Trustees to help strengthen The Old School’s sustainability and ensure it continues to make a positive impact on the wellbeing of our local community. With my background in management, I bring strong communication, organisation, and leadership skills to the role, supporting the centre’s growth and safeguarding its future, as well as that of Warrington VIP. I’m passionate about community spirit, and making sure The Old School remains a welcoming, creative, and inclusive space for everyone.

TRUSTEE: Clare Grimes

I was delighted to join the Old School board of trustees in 2024 to help drive success and assist the great team running the Fairfield and Howley charity. I have had experience on charity and volunteer boards for over 20 years, and enjoy being able to share my experience with others, while continually learning from the other board members and those involved in many capacities. I began my relationship with the Old School in 2024 through Centenary Theatre Company, a charity where I sit as company secretary, who began using the space for their rehearsals and are proud to now call The Old School home.

TRUSTEE: Deb Podmore

As a tenant running a small independent organisation offering pottery classes to the community, I wanted to give something back to The Old School Project and help make a positive difference. Everyone who visits always comments on the warm and welcoming atmosphere, it’s a lovely place to learn a new skill, get creative, or simply enjoy a cuppa and a chat. I joined the board of trustees to help build on that sense of community and support the Old School’s growth and future. It hasn’t always been easy, time is often the biggest challenge, but together with my fellow trustees, I’m proud that we can continue to make meaningful changes and ensure the Old School remains a vibrant space for everyone.

VOLUNTEER: MICHELLE

I joined the Old School front-of-house team to get more involved in the community and do something for myself. Volunteering here has been a wonderful experience, it’s such a lovely, vibrant community centre with a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. Alongside greeting and supporting groups, I help manage the booking diary, answer general enquiries and the telephone, and keep things running smoothly at the front desk. It’s been a real privilege to get to know the people who come along to the Tuesday and Thursday day groups.

VOLUNTEER: TYLER

I first joined the Old School team after spotting an opportunity to get involved while volunteering with the Garden Gang. I wanted to learn new skills and help people, and volunteering on the front-of-house team has given me the chance to do both. I love welcoming visitors to the centre and making sure everyone feels at home. I help groups set up their rooms, report any maintenance issues around the building to keep the centre safe, and I’m always happy to assist anyone who needs a hand.

VOLUNTEER: darren

Darren not only gives his time to help wherever he’s needed, but he’s also a talented artist who enjoys joining our art classes, painting and sketching whenever he gets the chance. You’ll often spot Darren out and about with our RHS award-winning Garden Gang, keeping the gardens looking beautiful, helping VIP members, and lending a hand with just about anything, from receiving and delivering post and parcels to keeping The Old School running smoothly. In Darren’s own words: “The Old School is a home away from home for me, and it helps me to get out and about. I enjoy going on outreach projects with the Garden Gang and helping to keep The Old School looking tidy.”
